The 2026 Elk Fire started by lighting on 7-9-2026. The fire continues to burn in remote, rugged wilderness terrain where steep slopes, limited access, and complex terrain present significant risks to firefighters. Because of these conditions, firefighters are using indirect suppression tactics around the perimeter, allowing crew to work safely while establishing a secure containment footprint. Crews are leveraging natural barriers, roads, and strategic landscape features to build firelines and protect values at risk. Firefighter safety remains the top priority.
The Aspen Acres Fire was first reported on June 29th at approximately 6:00am that originated 10 miles northwest of Rye, Colorado near the Aspen Acres Campground in the area of the San Isabel National Forest. It experienced explosive growth due to record low fuel moisture levels and persistent red flag conditions in the week prior to and days following the ignition. The fire was wind driven by 40+ mph winds with gusts estimated to be up to 100 mph. It has impacted the community of Beulah, Colorado and the surrounding area in both Custer and Pueblo Counties.

CURRENT SITUATION: Considerable rain fell across the fire area through the evening last night. Suppression repair remains the primary focus along the north, east, and southern portions of the fire’s perimeter. In the north, firefighters continue indirect containment operations, supported by roughly 15,000 feet of hose now in place. Within the Mount Massive Wilderness, Wildland Fire Modules are addressing remaining areas of heat, which included an estimated 300–500 spot fires. As of 7 a.m., management of the Willow Fire has transitioned from California Interagency Incident Management Team 8 to the incoming Wyoming Incident Management Team 3. Motorists should remain alert for increased fire traffic in the Willow Fire area.
