Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit Renewal Course

Your permit may be expiring, but your training doesn’t have to!

Effective July 1, 2025, Colorado changed the requirements for renewing a Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) under House Bill 24-1174.

Renewal applicants must now demonstrate handgun competency through an approved method, including completing a qualifying refresher course. Simply submitting your renewal application without updated proof of competency is no longer sufficient.

Guardian Skills Academy offers a Colorado CHP Renewal Course designed to satisfy the state’s updated refresher training requirements.

What Has Changed?

Under Colorado’s updated CHP renewal requirements, qualifying refresher training must include:

• A minimum of 2 hours of in-person instruction.
• Instruction on changes to federal and state firearm laws.
• A live-fire qualification requiring at least 50 rounds of ammunition.
• A minimum score of 70% on the live-fire qualification.
• A written, open-book competency examination requiring a minimum score of 80%.
• Training conducted by a sheriff-verified firearms instructor.

Your training certificate must be dated within six months before submitting your renewal application.
