About this event
On the Range with El Vaquero: Desserts, Drinks & History!
Join Stages of History for an unforgettable evening of Western history, storytelling, and community celebration at our annual fundraising event, "On the Range with El Vaquero," on Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 6:30–8:30 p.m. at The Art Center in Grand Junction.
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and Colorado's 150th anniversary, this special event features acclaimed historian, author, and professional performer Angel Vigil, who brings to life the fascinating history of the vaqueros—the skilled Mexican horsemen whose traditions, techniques, and culture helped shape the American cowboy.
Through engaging first-person historical storytelling, Vigil invites audiences to discover the often-overlooked Hispanic roots of the American West. From horsemanship and cattle ranching to the clothing, language, and customs still associated with cowboy culture today, guests will gain a deeper appreciation for the lasting contributions of the vaqueros to Western history.
The evening will feature a lively historical performance, delicious desserts, drinks, and opportunities to connect with fellow history enthusiasts. Guests are encouraged to come dressed in their Western best!
More than a celebration of history, this event supports the next generation of historians and storytellers. Proceeds benefit Stages of History, a Grand Junction-based nonprofit dedicated to bringing history to life for students throughout Western Colorado through interactive educational programs, historical performances, and its NextGen Chautauqua program.
By attending, guests help provide local students with opportunities to research historical figures, develop public speaking skills, explore diverse perspectives, and discover the people and stories that shaped our communities.
