Aspen —Battle Mountain and Eagle Valley soccer are locked in a head-to-head race for the 4A Western Slope title. Both teams sit atop the league standings at 4-2. They meet on Oct. 5 in Edwards.

The stakes rose sharply on Tuesday night. The Battle Mountain Devils defeated No. 1 Glenwood Springs 2-1. The Eagle Valley Huskies crushed Summit 6-0. Make no mistake: this is a two-horse race.

The Devils’ win was scrappy. Alfonso Gallegos forced an own goal in the first half. Glenwood Springs tied it early in the second half. But the Devils found a way. Freshman Daniel Najera delivered a perfect corner kick. Aaden Gallardo tapped it in with 20 minutes left. Keeper Tiago Horruitiner made key saves late to seal it.

Devils coach Bratzo Horruitiner noted the league’s rising quality. “Glenwood is playing really good futbol,” he said. “The league is getting really competitive, so I’m happy.”

The Huskies had a much easier time. Coach David Cope’s squad shut out Summit. Five different players scored. Daniel Salazar netted two. Luc Glendining and Steven Herrera handled the rest. Cope sent a text to his counterpart in Gypsum: “Tell Bratzo!”

That rivalry runs deep. It started on Sept. 8 in Gypsum. Eagle Valley won 2-1. Now the tables turn.

Before the big showdown, both teams host senior nights on Thursday. Battle Mountain takes on Rifle. Eagle Valley plays Summit again. These games serve as warm-ups. The real test is in three weeks.

Context matters here. The 4A Western Slope conference is small. Every point counts. A tie or a loss can drop a team down the standings. Currently, there is no separation between the Devils and the Huskies. They are even.

Vail Mountain School also played this week. The Rangers beat Middle Park 4-0 on Sept. 26. Alec Uribe scored twice. William Kuti and Walker Harris also found the net. However, Vail Mountain lost 2-1 to Gunnison on Sept. 29. Colm Kinney scored the lone goal. Vail Mountain is 5-6 overall and 1-2 in the 3A Western Slope. They host Delta on Thursday.

Back to the 4A race. The Oct. 5 match in Edwards will likely decide the regular season champion. If one team wins, they likely clinch the top spot. If they split points, the race stays alive.

Fans should watch the defensive duels. Glenwood Springs proved they can score against top defenses. Summit showed they can be outclassed by elite attacks. Battle Mountain has the edge in clutch moments. Eagle Valley has the firepower to overwhelm opponents.

Read that again: both teams are 4-2. That is the current reality. Any other result is speculation. The facts are simple. Two teams. One title. One venue.

The schedule is tight. Senior nights happen Thursday. The showdown happens Oct. 5. There is little time to recover from mistakes. Injuries or suspensions could shift momentum. But right now, health is good. Morale is high.

Coach Cope’s text to Coach Horruitiner highlights the mutual respect. It is not just competition. It is a relationship built on shared goals and local pride. The players know this. They play for each other as much as against each other.

The Edwards venue is neutral ground. It favors neither team. Home crowd advantage is minimal. Skill and execution will decide the outcome. Weather could play a role. October in Colorado can be unpredictable. Rain or cold might affect ball movement. Teams will prepare for various conditions.

Popcorn is ready. The theater is set. The main event is approaching. Local fans are gearing up. Social media buzz is increasing. Predictions are flying. But predictions are cheap. Results are expensive.

Wait for the whistle. Watch the ball. Listen to the crowd. Feel the tension. This is high school soccer at its best. No fancy stadiums. No huge paychecks. Just pure passion and effort.

The race is on. The clock is ticking. The stage is set. The actors are ready. The curtain rises soon. Stay tuned. The show begins shortly. Don’t miss a moment. The drama unfolds in real time.

Keep your eyes on the field. Keep your ears open. Keep your hearts engaged. This is our story. Our teams. Our valley. Our pride.

The final whistle is still distant. The next step is clear. Play well. Win big. Take the crown. The path is straight. The destination is clear. The journey continues.

End of preview.
