Denver Advances to Final Three for 2028 Democratic National Convention
The Democratic National Committee selected Denver, Boston, and Philadelphia as finalists to host the 2028 presidential convention. Party leaders will announce the winner later this year.

Denver made the cut.
The Democratic National Committee narrowed its field of potential host cities for the 2028 presidential convention to three: Denver, Boston, and Philadelphia. The decision came Thursday as the party looks toward a wide-open primary to succeed President Donald Trump.
DNC Chairman Ken Martin called the bids “incredibly strong.” He promised the event would be an “inspiring celebration of our party’s future nominee.”
Denver Mayor Mike Johnston didn’t waste time. He issued a written statement celebrating the news immediately.
“We are honored that Denver has advanced as one of the top three candidates to host the 2028 Democratic National Convention,” Johnston said. “Denver has always been a city forged on the frontier. A place defined by big dreams, bold ideas and pioneer spirit. We proved what this city could do when we hosted in 2008, and we’ve only gotten better since.”
The final decision lands later this year. Party leaders will pick one city from the finalist trio. Republicans have already locked in Houston for their 2028 convention.
The Democratic event is scheduled for Aug. 7-10, 2028. It serves as the formal introduction of the nominee and a rally for the base. It kicks off the most intense campaigning period before the general election.
Officials visited all five finalist cities in April and May. They weighed logistical capacity and fundraising potential. Atlanta and Chicago were eliminated. The party did not specify why. Chicago hosted the 2024 convention. Atlanta was a strong contender but fell short.
The three remaining cities share traits. They are liberal strongholds surrounded by suburban areas critical to the party’s recent success. They offer access to fundraising networks and key demographic groups, including labor unions.
Colorado and Massachusetts have voted Democratic in recent presidential elections. Pennsylvania is different. It remains a battleground. Donald Trump won Pennsylvania in 2024.
Philadelphia last hosted the convention in 2016. Denver held it in 2008. Boston hosted in 2004.
The stakes are high for the DNC leadership. Democrats face a fundraising disadvantage compared with Republicans. The party carries financial debt. Martin has faced criticism over his stewardship of the organization.
During a recent DNC meeting in Texas, Martin downplayed those critics. He called for unity as the party attempts to flip the narrowly divided Republican-led House and potentially take back control of the Senate.
The midterm elections serve as a proving ground before the presidential primary gears up.
The short version: Denver is still in the running. The city has the history, the infrastructure, and the political alignment to host. Party leaders will make the call later this year. But for now, the list is cut. The work continues.
