Steamboat Springs —The Hayden School District didn’t just nudge the needle. It kicked it.

Superintendent Eric Owen told the Steamboat Pilot that state preliminary 2026 performance frameworks show an increase of over 11 percentage points in overall scores since 2024. That is not a rounding error. That is a shift.

The obvious take is that the district is coasting on its existing reputation. Read that again. The data suggests otherwise. The district maintains its Accredited rating, but the trajectory points toward Accredited with Distinction by 2027. Owen called the current results "meaningful progress to celebrate." He was right. But he left out the part that matters most: the attendance.

Chronic absenteeism declined 10.6 percentage points districtwide.

This is the metric that usually lags behind academic gains. When attendance jumps, it means families are bringing their kids to school. It means the building feels safe. It means the schedule works. The Pilot reported that the district added a K-12 dean of students during the 2025-26 academic year. This role coordinates student support, examines discipline data, and improves attendance. The dean works with principals, counselors, and teachers to identify patterns that guide interventions.

Hayden Valley Elementary School hit a milestone. It earned a preliminary Performance Plan rating, Colorado’s highest school plan category. Its framework score jumped nearly 34 percentage points from 2025. Students exceeded growth expectations in mathematics.

Hayden High School followed suit. Its framework score rose over seven percentage points from 2024. It met expectations in PSAT reading and writing achievement, mathematics growth, and postsecondary readiness.

The district focused its instruction on five components of rigor: high expectations, deep thinking, relevant work, student ownership, and productive struggle. Owen noted that the addition of an instructional coach at the elementary and middle schools strengthened collaboration around lesson planning and assessment results.

The short version: the numbers are up. The attendance is up. The ratings are up. The district is moving closer to its 2027 goal. The state’s final review process is still pending, but the preliminary data is clear.

Owen said the results reinforce the district’s commitment to strong instruction and high expectations. He did not mention the cost. He skipped over the staffing challenges. And he left out the aging infrastructure. Those are the stories you don’t see in a press release. They are the reasons why an 11-point jump is so rare.

The community should watch the final state review. If the Accredited with Distinction rating sticks, Hayden becomes a model for rural districts trying to compete with urban centers. If it slips, the 11-point gain becomes a warning sign of a plateau.

Worth watching.
