The air in Vail’s CoLab space smells like wet fur and cheap coffee. It’s a specific scent — earthy, urgent, and strangely comforting. On Thursday and Friday, that smell will be amplified by the presence of Matt Nelson and Javier, his dog. Javier holds the title of chief executive officer for WeRateDogs, a fact that sounds like a joke until you realize the organization has paid for nearly 3,500 dogs’ veterinary bills.

Nelson is bringing his viral fame to the GoPro Mountain Games. He’s taking the stage at the CoLab Creator Stage. This isn’t just a photo op. It’s an adoption party. It’s a rating session. It’s a fundraising engine disguised as entertainment.

Locals know the brand. You’ve seen the tweets. A picture of a dog. A score ranging from 12/10 to 15/10. The commentary is humorous, often brutal in its affection. But the metric is real. The impact is financial.

Nelson didn’t plan for this. He grew up surrounded by golden retrievers. There was never a time without a dog. He was an emotional kid who struggled to regulate. Dogs were the only things that listened. They offered a space to vent. They provided calm.

“I grew up surrounded by golden retrievers,” Nelson said. “There wasn’t a stretch of time when we didn’t have a dog. Simply being around them, with access to that constant joy, you can’t see your life without them. You understand their value as a family member, not just an animal.”

In college, he tried comedy. He wrote jokes about everything. Twitter was new. Retweets were the only way to spread content. He chased reach. He wanted to hit the most people. He found other comedians doing the same thing. Then he noticed the pattern. Dog content outperformed his jokes. Every time.

He launched the WeRateDogs account in 2015. He asked his followers if they wanted it. They said yes. He didn’t expect it to take over.

The real work started a year later. He shared a dog’s GoFundMe. The campaign soared past its goal. It wasn’t just a viral moment. It was a solution to a problem locals face every day: vet bills.

Nelson began a weekly fundraising effort. He targeted owners drowning in medical costs. The turning point came when he adopted Doug. Doug was an 11-year-old German shepherd. He had medical issues. He had behavioral issues. He likely would have stayed in a shelter forever.

Nelson experienced the struggle firsthand. He saw how steep costs kept good dogs in cages. That pain birthed the 15/10 Foundation. The nonprofit supports dogs with pricey medical needs. It has sponsored nearly 3,500 dogs.

Now, Nelson rarely makes public appearances. He prefers the screen to the stage. But he’s coming to Vail. He’s bringing Javier. They’ll be on the CoLab stage on June 4 and June 5.

This is about more than internet fame. It’s about the cost of keeping a family member alive. It’s about the gap between what insurance covers and what a vet charges. It’s about the fact that many dogs are left behind because their owners can’t pay the bills.

Nelson is here to bridge that gap. He’s here to rate dogs. He’s here to raise money. And he’s here to prove that a joke account can save lives.

The GoPro Mountain Games draws athletes from around the world. They come for the extreme sports. They come for the mountain air. But this week, the spotlight shifts from skiers to shelter dogs. Nelson is betting that locals will pay attention. He’s betting that they’ll open their wallets.

The short version? WeRateDogs is no longer just a meme. It’s a lifeline. And it’s landing in Vail this week.
