Alcove Nature Trail

The Alcove Nature Trail is a short, accessible hike in Fruita, Colorado, situated within the Colorado National Monument. The trail leads into an ancient sand dune and features firm natural gravel surfaces with an average width of five feet. The first quarter mile is wheelchair-friendly, and the route has an average running slope of seven percent. Elevation ranges from approximately 4,505 feet to 5,858 feet. Most sources classify the trail as easy or moderate, with a typical length of 0.4 to 1 mile depending on whether the route is counted as one-way or out-and-back. Hikers generally complete the trail in 18 minutes to two hours. The area is open year-round, though September through November offers favorable conditions for fall hiking.
