About

Almont Campground is a moderate difficulty, first-come, first-served site located in Gunnison National Forest near Almont, Colorado. Situated adjacent to State Highway 135 approximately ten miles north of Gunnison and twenty miles south of Crested Butte, the campground sits at an elevation of 8,011 feet. The landscape consists primarily of aspen and cottonwood trees providing shade for standard, non-electric campsites. Each site includes a fire ring and picnic table, accommodating tents and RVs. Water is available via a hand pump on-site. The campground operates from May through September and allows pets. A key feature is its proximity to the Almont Gorge, where the East River and Taylor River merge to form the Gunnison River. This location offers walking access to river activities including fishing, kayaking, and wildlife viewing. Recreation options nearby include four-wheel driving and mountain biking. The site is open year-round but sees peak usage in summer when temperatures range from the mid-60s to upper-70s during the day and cool at night. Visitors must physically arrive to claim a site, though payment can be made on-site using the Recreation.gov mobile app via QR code. Stage 2 fire restrictions are currently in effect, prohibiting wood fires but allowing generators and liquid petroleum stoves. Last-minute supplies can be purchased at Three Rivers Resort General Store in Almont or the Taylor Park Trading Post. The typical duration for a visit is about two hours, though this reflects setup time and initial exploration rather than total stay length.
