Alta Lakes Campground is a dispersed camping area in the San Juan Mountains near Telluride, situated at approximately 11,100 feet. The site consists of roughly 16 to 20 designated campsites that are completely undeveloped, featuring rock fire pits, picnic tables, and portable toilets. There are no water sources or hookups on site, requiring a pack-in, pack-out approach. The access road, Forest Road #632, is narrow, rough, and steep, with sharp switchbacks, boulders, and occasional water crossings. High clearance and 4WD are required; trailers and RVs are not allowed. The road passes the Alta Ghost Town before reaching the lakes. The campground offers views of three alpine lakes and surrounding peaks. It is open from May through September, though snow can persist into late spring or arrive in October. Weekends and holidays are often crowded. Cell service is spotty.
