The American Lake Trail is a steep, moderate-to-hard hike located near Aspen on the Western Slope, leading to a pristine alpine lake surrounded by conifers and extensive aspen groves. The trailhead begins off Castle Creek Road, where parking is available but restrooms are not established at the start; the nearest outhouses are located up-valley at the Ashcroft ghost town parking lot. The route involves a significant climb via switchbacks through mature aspen forests and evergreen woods, with the final approach crossing scree and talus to reach the lake. Fall is a prime season for viewing, with many hikers noting superior leaf color compared to the nearby Cathedral Lake Trail. The trail is approximately 6.5 miles round-trip with an elevation gain between 1,970 and 2,400 feet, reaching an elevation of roughly 11,365 feet. It is open for hiking from late spring through November, though winter snowpack often limits access. Pets are permitted, and the trail is part of the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness.
