Amphitheater Campground

Amphitheater Campground sits on a mountainside just half a mile south of Ouray, Colorado, at an elevation of 8,400 feet. The site is named for the massive gray rock cliffs formed by ancient volcanic and glacial activity that overlook the town. The campground features 35 tightly designed loops with single-family campsites, most designated for tent camping. Facilities include vault toilets, drinking water, trash collection, picnic tables, and fire rings. Several sites accommodate smaller trailers and RVs up to 35 feet in length, specifically sites through 15. The area is bear country, requiring safe food storage. Access is via State Highway 550, turning left at the campground sign and traveling one mile. The site is open from May through September, though dates vary with weather. Recreation options include hiking trails such as Upper Cascade Falls, Baby Bath Tubs, and Chief Ouray Mine, which begin at the campground trailhead. The area is also popular for off-road jeep trails. Parking is available on-site.
