About
Apocalypse '91 is a difficult sport climbing route located in Rifle Mountain Park, Rifle, Colorado. The route sits on Leadville Formation limestone, characterized by sustained, overhanging terrain. It begins out of the dirt in the parking lot, not from within the cave itself, and is identified by a bulbous blue tufa at the start. The climb features a crux section requiring kneebar trickery, followed by a rest, a powerful bulge, and a finishing headwall with slippery crimpers. The route is a long pitch, typically requiring 15 quickdraws and a 60-meter rope. It is considered a Rifle classic, with grades often feeling one to two numbers harder than similar climbs elsewhere due to the overhanging style and hold types. Access includes on-site parking, and the area is pet friendly. Day passes cost $10. The climbing area is accessible year-round, though spring and fall provide the best conditions due to reduced silt on the rock. Summer weekends can be crowded.
