The Balanced Rock Trail in Rifle is a short, difficult mountain biking climb that serves as a direct access route to the Whiskey Tango Express trail system. The route begins north of Puma, navigating a maze of doubletrack and motorcycle trails before entering Loop 3 singletrack. The climb features two distinct hike-a-bike sections; the first is short and potentially cleanable, while the second is steep and rutted. After the singletrack reaches the Balanced Rock formation, riders turn right onto a doubletrack climb characterized by meandering sections and three steep switchbacks at the top. The trail is generally accessible from April through October, with parking available at the trailhead. Pets are permitted.
