Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park offers fall hiking along the South and North Rims, providing views of steep drop-offs and the Gunnison River. The park is located near Montrose on the Western Slope. Fall hiking occurs from September through November. Most trails stay on the rim because accessing the canyon floor requires rock climbing. The Rim Rock Trail is a popular moderate option connecting the South Rim Campground and Visitor Center. It is rocky, contains stairs, and follows the canyon edge. Other trails include Warner Point and Oak Flat. Drinking water is not available from late fall through mid-spring. Parking is available. Pets are permitted. Hikers should be bear aware and keep cattle gates closed on the North Rim where cattle graze. A major wildfire in 2025 affected some trails, so checking current conditions is advised.
