About

Black Streak is a rock climbing area on Umbrella Wall, located near Telluride and Norwood on the Western Slope. The site sits at an elevation of 9,836 feet and features sport climbing routes on Telluride conglomerate. The wall is characterized by massive, unmistakable roofs and an orange or yellow face with a large triangular roof. A defining feature is a 20 to 30 foot wide black streak running down the middle, with three additional smaller black streaks on the right side. The area offers moderate difficulty routes, making it suitable for climbers with some experience who can handle a challenging but manageable ascent. Umbrella Wall receives early morning sun and remains in shade for most of the day, which helps keep the rock dry despite seepage under the large roofs. This makes it a reliable option when rain is forecasted. The area includes classic routes such as "High Lonesome," rated 5.11c. Access is available via a faint trail that breaks off to the right on the Falls Walls or Streaked Wall trail, leading through a boulderfield before reaching the wall. Parking is available at the base, and pets are allowed. Climbing opportunities exist year-round.
