About

The Blue Lakes Trailhead in Breckenridge leads to Upper and Lower Blue Lakes, which are reservoirs accessible via gravel roads. This is not the Blue Lakes Trail in the San Juan Mountains near Ridgway. The route offers parking without reservations and allows pets on leash. The hike is rated easy to moderate, with a short walk to a waterfall between the lakes and a steeper climb to the Upper Lake. Elevation starts around 11,700 feet. Access is limited to summer and early fall, typically July through October, as the dirt road closes in winter. Hikers should expect high-altitude wind and potential snow at higher elevations. Wildlife includes mountain goats, marmots, and pikas. The trail is suitable for families and dogs.
