About

Brink of Disaster is a sport and top-rope climbing route located in the Palisade area of Western Colorado, near Estes Park. The route sits at an elevation of 4,800 feet on Palisade Mountain, accessible via Storm Mountain Road. The climb is classified as easy and features a short approach from parking near the Big Thompson Monument to the State Patrol officers. Climbers traverse up and left, encountering a crux just after the first clip on a short, steep section that slabs out after 30 feet. The route is approximately 60 feet long and includes two bolts with a cam placement in a horizontal crack above the second bolt. A notable feature is a loose boulder located three feet to the left of the two-bolt anchor. The name Brink of Disaster refers to this boulder, which poses a hazard if dislodged. Parking is available at the start of the trail. The area allows pets and remains open to climbers, with access issues related to dead trees from the Cameron Peak Fire resolved since 2023. The route is suitable for a half-day excursion.
