About
Calving Season is a rock climbing route located on Big Johnny Wall in Palisade, Colorado. The site sits at an elevation of 4,800 feet and offers moderate difficulty routes suitable for climbers with some experience. The primary feature is an 85-foot dihedral crack that ascends the farthest right side of the wall. Climbers scramble up a ravine to reach a small, flat belay station before beginning the climb. The route features good to marginal protection and requires a standard rack with runners, including up to a #3 Friend. A horn on the left side halfway up can be slung and extended. After climbing vertically past a slabby ledge, the route tops out near a tree used as an anchor. Rappelling from this tree allows for minimal rope drag. Parking is available at the site, and pets are permitted. The area remains accessible year-round.
