Castlewood Canyon State Park in Franktown offers moderate fall hiking across 2,628 acres of Black Forest prairie and canyon terrain. Located southeast of Denver, the park features over 12 miles of trails along Cherry Creek, ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. Key historical and geological features include the ruins of the 1890s Castlewood Dam and 60-foot rock climbing walls. Views extend to the Front Range and Pikes Peak. The park is open September through November for peak foliage, including cottonwoods. Facilities include two entrances: a main east entrance off Hwy 83 with flush restrooms and a visitor center, and a west entrance off Hwy 86 with vault toilets. Leashed dogs and horses are permitted. Daily vehicle passes range from $10 to $17 depending on license plate origin.
