Cerro Summit Trail System

The Cerro Summit Trail System is a 110-acre recreation area located 13 miles east of Montrose along Highway 50, just south of the summit off County Road P77. Owned and managed by the City of Montrose, the site features over 4 miles of singletrack developed for mountain biking, hiking, and trail running. The terrain includes quick downhills, surprising turns, and technical rock or boulder obstacles. The system is suitable for beginning mountain bikers and offers approximately an hour of riding if traversing trails in both directions. Access is available year-round, though the primary biking season runs from April through October. Parking is available at the trailhead, which is situated near an old narrow-gauge railroad bed and the remnants of a rope tow. The Old Spanish National Historic Trail passes through the south side of the highway. The landscape consists of wild, hilly terrain with mountain shrub, open sage flats, and grasslands. Wildlife includes elk, deer, and occasional black bear. The area has no facilities or services, requiring visitors to dispose of human waste properly and pack out trash. Dogs are permitted but must be on a leash; riders should avoid bringing dogs if sheep are present in the area.
