About

The Chutes & Ladders Loop is a 6.9-mile mountain biking route in Fruita, Colorado, known for its distinct two-part character. The trail begins with steep, short climbs and technical descents that demand significant leg power, often forcing riders to walk sections due to the steepness and sticky dirt. After approximately half a mile of these 'chutes and ladders' ups and downs, the terrain shifts to fast, flowing singletrack with fewer surprises. The loop typically spans 6.9 miles with an elevation gain to around 5,593 feet, taking riders about two to two-and-a-half hours to complete. It is rated as difficult, primarily due to the initial aerobic demand and technical climbs, though the latter half is considered smooth and rideable. The trail is accessible from April through October, with parking available at the trailhead. Dogs are permitted, though some sources specify leash requirements. Riders are advised to follow the clockwise direction, starting by ascending Prime Cut to reach the main Chutes & Ladders section.
