Mee Canyon Trail

The Mee Canyon Trail is a challenging 2.8-mile loop located near Fruita, Colorado, on the Western Slope. The route climbs approximately 341 feet to a maximum elevation of 5,806 feet and typically takes about two hours to complete. Hikers traverse steep red rock canyon walls within the Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness. The trailhead is accessible via dirt roads, with specific seasonal closures: the Upper Road operates from April 15 through August 15, while the Lower Road is open from August 15 through February 15. Both roads close between mid-February and mid-April. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for the dirt road access, though standard vehicles may pass during dry conditions. Parking is available at the trailhead. The hike is rated difficult by some sources and medium by others, with steep terrain being the primary factor. The area features large sandstone alcoves, with Mee Alcove noted as one of the largest on the Colorado Plateau. The trail is open year-round, though winter conditions require caution.
