The Coke Ovens Out and Back is a 1-mile moderate hiking trail located in Colorado National Monument near Grand Junction, Colorado. The route follows Rim Rock Drive to the Upper Monument Canyon trailhead, descending via switchbacks before joining the Coke Ovens Trail. Hikers follow the canyon rim to a fenced overlook featuring large, rounded beehive-shaped rock formations composed of Wingate Sandstone. These structures formed from ancient sand dunes eroded by wind and weather, with iron minerals creating red, orange, and purple hues. The trail is accessible year-round and offers parking at the trailhead. An entrance fee of $25 per vehicle applies, or visitors may use a national parks pass. The hike typically takes between 30 minutes and one hour to complete.
