The Dark Canyon Trail Point to Point is a remote, rugged hiking route in the West Elk Wilderness near Crested Butte and Marble, Colorado. The trail spans approximately 13 to 14.6 miles and is generally considered difficult due to elevation changes and terrain. It typically takes between 6.5 and 10 hours to complete, depending on the specific route segment and pace. The trail begins at the Horse Ranch Park trailhead on the north side of Kebler Pass, starting in subalpine forests and meadows before descending into a tight, rugged canyon. Key features include the Devils Staircase, a long series of switchbacks leading down to Middle Anthracite Creek, and junctions with the Ruby Anthracite Trail and West Anthracite Trail. The route is popular for backpacking and birding but is closed to mountain bikes. It is a well-signaled trail, though GPS is recommended for overgrown segments. The area is a good hunting ground, so hikers should wear bright colors in the fall. Parking is available at the trailhead. The trail is accessible year-round, though conditions vary, with snow and ice possible in winter months. The best times to visit are generally March through November.
