Dinosaur Hill

Dinosaur Hill is a 1-mile loop trail in Fruita, Colorado, situated on the Morrison Formation. The hike climbs approximately 150 feet over packed dirt and rocky sections, taking about 60 to 90 minutes. The trail features several switchbacks and leads to an overlook with views of the Grand Valley and the Colorado River. The site is notable for paleontological significance; in 1901, Elmer Riggs excavated a nearly complete Apatosaurus skeleton here. Visitors can view the original quarry site, a cast of a dinosaur femur, and interpretive signs detailing the excavation and fossil preservation. The terrain is high-desert, dominated by juniper, sagebrush, and rabbitbrush. Facilities at the trailhead include a large gravel parking area for cars and RVs, pit toilets, picnic tables, and a shelter. Drinking water is not available on site. Dogs are allowed on leash. The trail is open year-round and is generally considered moderate in difficulty.
