About
Ego Death is a rock climbing area located in Palisade, Colorado, on the Western Slope. The site sits at an elevation of 5,081 feet and offers parking for vehicles. It is pet-friendly and accessible year-round from January to December. The climbing difficulty is moderate, with routes suitable for climbers who have some experience but do not require highly advanced techniques. The typical duration to explore the routes is around 4 hours. The primary feature is a sport climbing route described as a link-up traverse. The route begins with the bottom boulder of 'The Facilitator.' Climbers move right through a crusty, fat, old-style mid-sport boulder problem to reach a rest. From there, they launch into another harder boulder problem to gain the pinch hold on 'Ego Loss.' The upper section may feel more difficult due to the accumulated climbing. Climbers can finish at either anchor with similar difficulty levels. Advanced options include climbing past the anchors to no-hands stances and reversing back down. Protection for the route consists of 6 bolts extending to Mussy hooks. The GPS coordinates are 39.69972, -105.42457. The route was shared by Shirtless Mike in September 2024 and has received approximately 12 page views per month. While other sources mention an 8B+ boulder problem and a recent climbing guide death in the broader region, these are distinct from the specific Palisade location's core route statistics. The area is currently subject to CriticalGold Mountain Fire evacuation orders in the GO zone.
