About
Elk Creek Campground sits on the north shore of Blue Mesa Reservoir, Colorado's largest body of water, within the Curecanti National Recreation Area. Located approximately 15 to 16 miles west of Gunnison on U.S. Highway 50 at Mile Marker 142, the site offers moderate difficulty camping with an elevation of roughly 7,540 feet. The campground features 155 campsites accommodating tents, trailers, and RVs, with electric hookups available in Loop D. Facilities include restrooms, fire rings, and limited cell service. Blue Mesa Adventure Pods are available in Loop C through the park concessioner, Elk Creek Marina LLC. The site operates year-round, with reservations typically accepted from mid-May to mid-September. Water-based activities are central to the location, supported by nearby boat ramps at Elk Creek, Lake Fork, and Iola. The reservoir supports fishing for Kokanee Salmon and rainbow trout, as well as windsurfing and water skiing. Bald eagles are present year-round. Visitors must inspect watercraft for Zebra and Quagga mussels before launching during peak seasons (May through October). Quiet hours run from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
