Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park offers moderate fall hiking along the South Rim, featuring steep drop-offs, rocky terrain, and views into the canyon. The area is known for sheer cliff walls and monolithic rock towers. Hikers should expect to spend approximately two hours on trails like the Rim Rock Trail, which connects the South Rim Campground and Visitor Center. Parking is available, and pets are permitted. Water is not available from late fall through mid-spring. The park is located about an hour’s drive from Gunnison. Bears are active, and hikers should keep snacks within reach. The landscape includes changing aspen foliage in the surrounding areas, though the canyon itself is defined by its geology.
