About
The Engineer Mountain Trail Head in Durango, Colorado, serves as the starting point for a moderate 9.5-mile hike to the summit of Engineer Mountain, which rises to approximately 12,200 feet. Located about 35 miles north of Durango on U.S. Highway 550 near Coal Bank Pass, the trailhead is easily accessible and offers parking and restrooms. The route climbs steadily through aspen groves, spruce-fir forests, and sub-alpine meadows, offering views of the Needle and Grenadier mountain ranges. While often described as moderate due to its even uphill grade, the total elevation gain of roughly 2,000 to 3,600 feet can be challenging for beginners. The trail is open from late spring through November, with September and October providing ideal conditions for fall hiking. Pets are permitted, and the trail intersects with several others, allowing for loop hikes or point-to-point rides. The area is well-marked and popular with both hikers and mountain bikers.
