About
Eve of War is a moderate trad climbing route located in Rough Canyon, just outside Grand Junction on Colorado's Western Slope. The crag sits at an elevation of 4,622 feet in the high desert, characterized by sun-baked red rock and dry air. The primary route consists of a single 120-foot pitch featuring sustained 5.8 hand jams and good crack climbing. It is noted for being solid at its grade, offering reliable holds that are less common in the area's typically harder desert cracks. Climbers should carry a rack heavy with #2 and #3 cams, along with small gear for the anchor. The approach is straightforward from the Rough Canyon access point near Grand Junction. Parking is available on site, and pets are permitted. The wall faces west, absorbing morning sun and shading by afternoon, making early starts advisable during warmer months. An optional second pitch extends 20 feet to the right on a foot traverse, leading into a 30-foot 5.10 corner crack that demands careful technique and thin gear placements. The descent involves a controlled downclimb or a short walk off. The route is accessible year-round, though winter conditions may bring snow and ice.
