Gate 5

Gate 5 is a National Forest trailhead located 6.4 miles northwest of Pagosa Springs, Colorado. It serves as the primary access point for the Martinez Canyon Area and connects directly to the Turkey Springs Trail System. The site is situated near Uptown Pagosa Springs and offers views of Martinez Canyon, which cuts through Dakota Sandstone. The trailhead sits at an elevation of 7,580 feet, with the route gaining up to 960 feet and reaching a maximum elevation of 7,980 feet. The Upper Rim Trail begins here and is described as rockier than most other Turkey Springs trails, though it is one of the first to dry out in spring due to its south-facing aspect. The area has undergone forest treatments including controlled burns and biomass harvesting, resulting in a park-like state with widely spaced pines. The road leading to Gate 5 on North Pagosa Blvd remains open year-round. Hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers can access the trails from September through November, with a typical outing lasting about 2 hours. Parking is available at the trailhead, and pets are permitted.
