The Gothic Natural Area offers fall hiking near Crested Butte on the Western Slope. The primary route is Gothic Mountain via Washington Gulch Trail #403. This trail is rated moderate to very strenuous, with an elevation gain of 646 to 2,332 feet depending on the specific segment, reaching a maximum elevation of 12,625 feet. The hike typically takes 1.5 to 7 hours round trip, covering distances from 3.85 to 7.5 miles. Access is via Gothic Road (Route 135) north from Crested Butte to Washington Gulch Road, then left for 7.75 miles. A new parking area is located 1/4 mile past the closed old parking area. The trail is open in September through November but closes in winter due to snow. Parking is available, and pets are permitted. The route passes through spruce and fir forests and wildflower meadows, offering panoramic views of Gothic Valley and Mt. Baldy. Day hikes do not require a permit.
