The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison (GMUG) National Forests provide extensive hiking opportunities near Gunnison, Colorado. This combined forest covers over three million acres, offering terrain that ranges from the flat-topped Grand Mesa to rugged peaks in the Uncompahgre and Gunnison sectors. The area features over 3,000 miles of trails, supporting everything from easy family walks to challenging ascents. Elevation spans from 5,800 to 14,309 feet, creating diverse landscapes including alpine lakes, deep canyons, and dense forests. Fall hiking is accessible from September through November. Parking is available at trailheads, and pets are permitted on most trails. The moderate difficulty of many routes allows for day hikes, with typical durations around two hours for standard loops. The region contains over 300 alpine lakes on the Grand Mesa alone and notable waterfalls like Bridal Veil Falls in the Uncompahgre sector. Hikers can access scenic byways and specific trail networks such as the Mesa Lake Trail or the Three Lakes Trail loop. The area supports various modes of travel, including horseback riding and cross-country skiing on suitable trails, though fall conditions favor hiking.
