About

The K1 - Kodel's Canyon Area is a moderate hiking route in Fruita, Colorado, located just west of the West Entrance to the Colorado National Monument. The trail begins near Dinosaur Hill, accessible by driving south on Highway 340 and turning right after Kingsview Road. An inconspicuous parking area sits on the west side of the road, and a restroom is available at Dinosaur Hill. The trailhead lacks a large sign but features markers on the fence and along the path. The route follows Kodel's Canyon, a major drainage west of Fruita. The trail heads south and west, passing junctions with other trails like K3 and K2 before dropping into the wash. Hikers follow the wash toward the canyon mouth, crossing the K7 trail at approximately 0.9 miles. The terrain is generally flat with mellow climbs and sandy conditions, making it suitable for rain. At 1.36 miles from the start, the trail leaves the wash and enters the Colorado National Monument, climbing a grassy hillside. The area offers views of distant Bookcliff mountains and is known for bighorn sheep. A closed cave used by miners is visible along the trail. The route supports birding, horseback riding, and dogs on leashes.
