Kennebec Trailhead

The Kennebec Trailhead serves as the primary access point for Kennebec Pass in the San Juan National Forest, located northwest of Durango. The pass sits at 11,683 feet and lies along the Colorado Trail. Access requires a 4WD vehicle with high clearance for the final miles of the road into Cumberland Basin, though 2WD vehicles can drive within a few miles of the summit. The trailhead is pet-friendly and offers parking. Hiking the pass involves a significant elevation gain of approximately 4,790 feet from the trailhead, making it a moderate to strenuous climb. Fall hiking occurs from September through November, offering views of aspen groves and high alpine scenery. There is no water available on the trail, and hikers should expect quick weather changes and potential snow or ice at higher elevations. Remains of the La Plata City mining camp are visible near the summit.
