About
The Kivu Route is a moderate single-pitch trad climbing route located at Vallecito Crags, near Durango, Colorado. Situated on the right side of the crag wall at an elevation of 5,870 feet, the route features a steady rock face with a distinct left-facing seam. Climbers ascend to a small ledge before tackling the seam, which offers manageable technical movement suitable for beginners and families. The route is popular with Camp Kivu and serves as an introduction to trad climbing, requiring minimal gear. Protection consists of two anchor bolts, making it secure for both top-roping and leading. The area offers on-site parking and is pet-friendly. Accessible year-round from January through December, the route sees consistent conditions with an average outing duration of four hours. The Penthouse area within Vallecito Crags provides mild approach terrain, and the route's exposure to direct sun creates warm pockets on cooler days. Early starts are advisable during summer months due to increased temperatures.
