About
Lake Irwin Campground sits on the western banks of a 65-acre alpine lake in Gunnison County, Colorado. Located approximately nine miles from Crested Butte at an elevation of 10,378 feet, the site offers moderate difficulty access via Forest Service Road 826. The campground is open from mid-July through September, though some sources indicate availability as early as May. It features 25 campsites, including nine tent-only spots and sixteen sites accommodating RVs up to 99 feet. Each site includes a fire ring, picnic table, and shade from mature Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir. Water is not provided on-site, requiring visitors to bring their own. Vault toilets are available. The terrain supports hiking, mountain biking, fishing for trout, and non-motorized watercraft such as canoes and stand-up paddleboards. Afternoon showers are common, and cell service is spotty with no coverage for T-Mobile or Verizon. The area is known for vivid wildflowers in July and August.
