Neosho Mine

The Sutton/Neosho Mine trail is a 4.4-mile roundtrip hike located near Ouray and Ridgway, Colorado, leading to historic mining ruins. The route begins with steep switchbacks for the first half-mile, gaining elevation to a bench that offers views of the Uncompahgre Valley and Ouray. The trail levels off as it winds along the ridge, passing through spruce and fir groves with scattered aspen. Key features include the Ouray Overlook, a second overlook facing Bear Creek Falls, and the Neosho Mine site, which retains structures like an antiques shop, bunkhouse, and ore car. The trail is rated moderate to hard due to the initial steep climb and rocky terrain. Parking is available at the trailhead on County Road 361. The area is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Pets are permitted, but visitors should avoid entering open mines for safety. The trail is accessible from July through November.
