Otto's Ladder

Otto's Ladder is a rock climbing route located in Colorado National Monument near Grand Junction. It is situated on Independence Monument, a prominent sandstone tower. The route is classified as easy and serves as a moderate introduction to multi-pitch climbing. The climb consists of four short pitches. The final pitch involves an exposed face leading to the summit. Historically, John Otto, the first superintendent of the monument, ascended this route in 1911. He drilled holes into the soft sandstone and placed iron pipes for hand and footholds. These holes remain and provide protection for climbers. The route is on the shady side of the monument, making warm days preferable. Parking is available at the trailhead. Pets are allowed. The elevation is listed as 4,656 feet in some records, though other sources cite 4,710 feet for the general area. Climbers should expect to spend around four to eight hours on the route. The area is accessible year-round, though guided trips often run from early March to late November.
