Devils Kitchen

Devils Kitchen is a moderate, out-and-back hiking trail located within Colorado National Monument, just inside the east entrance near Grand Junction. The trail leads to a distinctive natural rock grotto formed by a circle of large, upright boulders. The route follows a gradual ascent up slickrock, featuring carved steps that guide hikers across a wash and around the base of the formation to enter the opening. The trail is approximately 0.75 miles one way, with total distances ranging from 1.1 to 1.5 miles depending on the specific path taken. Elevation gain is modest, rising from roughly 4,990 to 5,187 feet. The trail is generally accessible year-round, though the best hiking window is March through October, as winter months may bring snow and ice. Parking is available at the trailhead on the left for auto access, with additional space in the adjacent Devils Kitchen Picnic Area. The trailhead is shared with the No Thoroughfare Canyon Trail and Old Gordon Trail, while Serpents Trail access lies across the road. Dogs are not permitted on this trail. The area is popular with locals, so visitors should expect other hikers.
