Roaring Fork River

The Roaring Fork River is a freestone fishery in Western Colorado, running from the Hunter-Frying Pan Wilderness near Aspen to Glenwood Springs. The river spans approximately 70 miles and descends from over 12,000 feet to roughly 5,800 feet. It is recognized as a Gold Medal and Blue Ribbon trout fishery. The upper section, from Independence Pass to Basalt, features faster currents and pocket water suitable for wading. The middle section between Aspen and Basalt offers deep pools and riffles with good public access. Below the confluence with the Frying Pan River at Basalt, the river widens and gains depth, providing excellent float fishing and holding large wild brown trout averaging 16 to 20 inches. The river supports populations of rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout, as well as whitefish. Fishing is available from April through October, with peak activity during Salmonfly hatches in May and June, PMD and Caddis hatches in summer, and BWO hatches in October. Parking is available near the river, and pets are permitted. The moderate difficulty reflects fast-moving currents and rocky terrain.
