About

Sendero Luminoso, also known as the Mountaineer's Route, is a nine-pitch rock climbing route located near Ouray, Colorado. The route climbs the prominent buttress on the Sandias, offering views of the town below. It is rated 5.9 PG13, though some climbers find it feels easier than the rating suggests. The route features subtle holds that require chalk and memorization. The climb consists of nine distinct pitches separated by large plateaus and ledges. Typical duration is around 5.5 to 12 hours depending on pace and group size. Parking is available at the Old Twin Peaks trailhead. The route is accessible year-round, though conditions vary with snow and ice in winter. Pets are allowed. The rock is described as relatively good, but climbers should watch for debris.
