About
The Smuggler Hunter Creek loop ride is a 9.6-mile mountain biking route in Aspen, Colorado, starting near downtown. The ride begins with a steep climb up the south-facing Smuggler Mountain jeep road, which serves as a warm-up or serious effort depending on fitness. At the Smuggler Observation Deck, riders gain views of downtown Aspen and the four ski areas: Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass. The route transitions to singletrack, including the BTS Trail and Tootsie Roll Trail, before descending through timber to the Hunter Creek valley floor. The loop concludes with a paved descent through residential neighborhoods back to the start. While much of the trail is rated intermediate, it includes expert technical challenges and rigorous climbing. The trail is accessible from April through October, though some sources cite May to November depending on snow conditions. Parking is available at the trailhead, and pets are permitted.
