Snooks Bottom Open Space

Snooks Bottom Open Space is a reservoir and park along the Colorado River, located south of Fruita in the Fruita Day Use Area. The primary hiking feature is the Snooks Bottom Loop, a mostly level trail that circles the pond. The first quarter mile is paved and wheelchair accessible, leading to a fishing pier. The remainder of the loop is gravel or dirt, with the section on the Opal Hill side noted as potentially rugged when muddy. The area features large cottonwood trees providing shade and benches along the banks, though there are no picnic tables. A rope swing hangs from a cottonwood tree near a backwater section. Access is via Kingsview Road off Highway 340; follow the road to the end of pavement, turn right onto the well-graveled entrance road, and proceed to the parking area. Parking is available. Restrooms consist of a portable toilet. There is no running water available on-site. The trail allows leashed dogs, bicycles, and horses. Fishing is permitted for bass, perch, trout, and catfish. The elevation ranges from approximately 4,463 to 4,550 feet. The area is open year-round, with fall hiking being a common activity.
