About
Stevens Creek Campground sits on the north shore of Blue Mesa Reservoir at the eastern end of the lake, approximately 12 to 20 miles west of Gunnison. It is the closest campground to Gunnison and serves as a primary access point for boaters entering the reservoir. The site is part of Curecanti National Recreation Area and operates on a first-come, first-served basis without reservations. The terrain is a semi-arid, treeless shrubland characterized by sagebrush and less than 12 inches of annual rainfall. Elevation is 7,538 to 7,540 feet. The campground offers 53 sites, including waterfront options, with amenities consisting of vault toilets, potable water, fire rings, and a picnic area. There are no electric hookups. The facility is open from late May through mid-September. Recreation includes fishing, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, and windsurfing on Colorado's largest body of water. Bird watching is notable, particularly for waterfowl in the shallower eastern end. The Neversink Trail, a 1.5-mile hike along the Gunnison River, begins upstream of the reservoir. Cell phone coverage is limited. The area is sunny and often windy.
