About
The Storm King Fire Memorial Trail in Glenwood Springs honors the 14 wildland firefighters who died during the South Canyon Fire on July 6, 1994. The trail was built by volunteers to commemorate those who fought a lightning-caused blaze that trapped them when winds shifted. Located approximately five miles west of Glenwood Springs near Canyon Creek, the trail serves as both a hiking route and a memorial site with interpretive signs explaining the disaster. The route is divided into two sections. The first climbs 700 feet over one mile to an observation point where visitors can view the fire line. The second section drops into a valley and climbs another half mile to an overlook marking where 12 smokejumpers and one hotshot firefighter died. A short side trail leads to a second memorial site. The trail is intentionally rugged and steep to reflect the conditions faced by the firefighters, featuring stairs to assist with the climb. Mementos such as caps, t-shirts, and gloves are left at the base of trees along the upper trail. The hike is approximately 4.2 miles out and back, typically taking about two hours. It is rated moderate to extremely difficult due to its steep and exposed nature. The trail is best visited in spring and fall for cooler temperatures. Parking is available at the trailhead, and dogs are permitted.
