Downtown Telluride serves as a central hub for hiking in the San Juan Mountains, situated at an elevation of 8,750 to 8,786 feet. The town lies in a box canyon with 13,000-foot peaks rising on three sides. Trails start within walking distance of the main street, allowing hikers to return for dinner without driving. Parking is available near trailheads, and the area is pet friendly. The Bear Creek Trail is a signature moderate route starting at the south end of Pine Street. It covers 4.8 miles round-trip with an elevation gain of about 1,040 feet and typically takes two to three hours. The path climbs through aspen groves and spruce forests to reach an 80-foot cascade. The trail is well-maintained but narrows in sections with exposure on canyon walls, requiring sturdy boots. Beyond the falls, the trail continues to a high meadow with wildflowers from late June through August. The Bridal Veil Falls Trail offers a gentler option, covering 1.8 miles one way along an old mining road next to the San Miguel River. It features gentle elevation gain and leads to Colorado's tallest free-falling waterfall, which drops 365 feet. The historic Smuggler-Union Hydroelectric Power Plant sits at the top of the falls. Water flow is strongest in late May and June, diminishing by late August. Hiking is the most popular activity during the summer season. The region contains over 30 hikes, ranging from flat riverside strolls to 14er summits. While accessible year-round, winter conditions may require additional gear. The high altitude is a notable factor for visitors.
