About

The Edge Loop: Coal Gulch is a mountain biking route in Fruita, Colorado, combining singletrack and fire roads with 360-degree views of the Book Cliffs. The trail is approximately 29 to 32 miles long with an elevation gain of roughly 1,450 to 3,566 feet. It is rated as easy to intermediate and is suitable for most skill levels. The ride features tight, slalom-like singletrack sections and a notable 50-foot rappel down a slickrock waterfall in Lipan Canyon, with an option to hike-a-bike around the descent. Parking is available near the trailhead at the 18 Road Bookcliffs Recreation Area. The route is open from April through October, though riders should note that spring conditions can vary with snow in upper reaches while lower trails remain dry. The North Fruita desert area can be hot from late spring into late fall, so adequate water and food are essential. Pets are permitted on the trail.
