About

The Grottos Loop is a short, 0.5-mile hiking trail located approximately nine miles east of Aspen, Colorado, along Independence Pass (Highway 82). The trail is generally considered easy to moderate and takes about ten to seventeen minutes to complete. It features unique geologic formations, including smooth granite rocks carved by the Roaring Fork River, small waterfalls known as the Cascades, and ice caves. The trailhead offers parking and toilets. Access is available year-round, though the best visiting period is typically June through October. The terrain is relatively flat with an elevation gain of approximately 67 feet, starting at around 8,360 to 9,545 feet. The path is wide and well-signed, making it suitable for families and dogs on leashes. Water features are prominent throughout the loop, with pools in the caves freezing during winter months.
